My Final Poster Design

This is my final design of my newspaper. I think the picture that i have used for my newspaper is the best one i had as it is a very striking picture. This was done on purpose as i want people who pass by to stop and be interested in what they are seeing which will therefore then make them want go and get my newspaper. The part that i did want to change was the 'free' part as i think that it looks quite cheesy but on the other hand it still gets the message across that my newspaper is a free. The writing in the boxes i think having two different fonts doesn't work as it looks unprofessional which i do not want my paper to seem like, however the writing does clear show when the paper is coming out and what its main story is about.

my poster

My poster design is simple but i believe it to be effective as it clearly shows what the papers about and what the paper has it in. I started of this design with inspiration from my masthead, so i kept the masthead at the top of my poster so my target audience can identify the poster to my newspaper. I then used a picture from my own photography to put as the main picture. I have chosen this picture because i feel it is the best picture to draw the attention of my target audience and it shows a local school team which my audience will know. I then used photoshop to crop the picture to the exact style i wanted which means that i got rid of all the unnesccary parts. I then decided to go and use the masthead red as a boarder which reinforces the red colour scheme of the newspaper. I then add in 3 boxes of 2 different colours which where red and green. I made these transparent as i didn't want these boxes blocking out parts of the main picture. The text that i put in these 3 boxes was the release date and what the main story was about. This was done in only a few words which will make it easier for a passer by to remember it.

plugins

These are all the plugs that i have made for my newspaper. As you can see they all have the theme of sports within them, which was done purposely as my newspaper is about sports. I have used a picture of a professional rugby player josh lewsey, i then cropped the image in photoshop to fit into the space of which i need it to fit. The next plug is to subscribe to my newspaper, i had made a simple designed one with a transparent red as the main colour however i believed this to not be very good so then i changed it in photoshop and made it a darker red as its main colour i then put in green grass at the bottom and then a football i thought that this was very effective and made this subscribe plug look ten times better than before. The next plug was the weather report, this is also made in photoshop and it is a massive improvement from my last design which i just simply got off the internet. So in this plug i then got images of the sun, clouds, rain and sun and clouds i then used a cool blue as the background colour which has the added effective of the weather and makes it seem more professional.

final newspaper

This is my final newspaper design. For my final design i have changed two parts of it and added in a new advert on the second page. The first part of my newspaper that i have changed was the weather, through my audience feedback about it, which was that it was too plain and boring so, i decide to create my own version of it.

I then changed the 'go online' part of the newspaper which was situated in the bottom right hand corner on the 2nd page. I decide to change this as my audience said it looked like i just put it there to take up space. This therefore made me rethink the design of the 'go online' part. So using photoshop i put a used the same colour red as my masthead and then put in the green grass in it with a football.

The new advert that i had made was a nike one and to make it had to use photoshop, with this I used a photo of the footballer messi and then used the nike logo. I got these photos of google images, i then opened them up in photoshop where i put a black background in and then the nike slogan 'Just Do It', i have used this as it is a top sporting brand and this will reinforce to my audience that it is a sports newspaper.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions.

My newspaper use conventions of which many local newspapers use such as the Bromley Metro. These conventions are things like a 5-column layout, which my newspaper uses making it similar to most local newspapers. I have used a 5 column layout because it is what my target audience is use to, and to change it would be to confuse them by putting more columns in or to make the paper look un-professional. Sporting newspaper like the Sun fill their pages with big pictures and short stories as this criteria fits their target audience, who are similar to my target audience. For my newspaper my target audience I think my chosen layout suits them well as it was similar to other sporting newspapers with conventions for more up market newspapers such as the Independent with a column layout of 7 or 8. This layout is for a small percentage of the public the higher educated so I feel that my 5-column layout suits my target audience.

The main headline for my newspaper is of a sporting achievement about boys at a school near where the reader lives. I believe that will help to draw in readers as it has relevance to them, because it is about people who live near them and encourages support for the team. My newspaper also contains similar aspects to other papers by using similar gutter spaces, by lines and jump lines. I did this because I feel that all papers should follow the same conventions.

The adverts in my newspaper have been edited by me so I could make them exactly how i wanted them to be. The most of them have the same theme of sports this is because it is relevant to my readers as the paper is about sport. They all are quite big this is because in many main local newspapers such as the metro use big advertising for funds so i decided to do the same it as it is conventional. One of my adverts is showing the franchise Nando's with the comedic value to it saying "eat mor chicken" with cow hooves, i used them as a one of my advertisements as this is a place where many young people go to eat and have fun with friends so this will also encourage people to read my paper to see what the advertisement is about. Another advert i used was nike as this is one of the most well known sporting brands which with this ad will reinforce the view of it being a serious sporting newspaper. The font used in my newspaper is different to that seen in all newspapers, it is a Sans Serrif font which is more appealing to the younger audience as it does not have any extra bits on the end of the letters. This is also more appealing to the younger audience as it does not seem to be fancy or to extravagant.

How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary tasks.

My ancillary tasks where for me to produce a radio advert and a poster to help advertise my Newspaper. These were aimed at my target audience, which was the younger generation.

When I started to design my poster I looked at different types of poster form different newspapers but they all did seem to follow similar conventions. I decided to use the conventions so that it didn't make my target audience go off my newspaper and look for different papers. I used such things as the same colouring with the fonts and with the background, with my main story picture on the front of it these are such conventions seen in newspaper advertising.

My poster consists of a picture of a rugby players competeing for the ball in a line out. I edited it using Photoshop to make cut out the unesscary parts of the photo such so i was left with the main part of it for my eye catching photo. I did this to try and show what my paper is about rather than show what it has in it.

Overall I feel that my Poster is successful in terms of being aesthetically pleasing with my targeted audience, the poster shows what the newspaper offers and is about just from one image. It was also beneficial as I used the same colour scheme that was in my newspaper as well as in my poster.

The making of my Radio Advert i believed to be the most difficult of all three task. I did some research on other newspaper radio adverts and i thought the best ones where the funny ones so i decide to put this aspect into my radio ad. For this I used GarageBand to produce the music for the backing track of my advert. I decided to produce an advert that had a charity type of feel to it but with a spoof type of aspect with this i believe that people will relate to this which also got straight to the point and made it sound pleasing so my target audience could remember it.

My newspaper named “Sport Bromley” took the most amount of time out of the all the tasks, but i think that this shows my newspaper was my best produced media product. I am happy with most aspects of my paper, including the theme, colours, layouts and photos. The photos used in newspaper where easy for me to take as it was a local game for me which was played just down the road from my school however i had taken a lot of photos which i had to get 25 photos to choose from to be my main story picture. I feel that the effort shows as the picture used shows clearly what the newspapers about and what the story is about.

The stories that I chose to write were targeted at my audience as my paper is all about people from the ages of 18-30. I feel that my stories where could have been a little bit better in terms of length by such as with my last story i wasnt able to write as much as i could about it as i did not have enough room with all my photos and advertising which was put into the paper. The language i used in my stories was not conventional of many local newspapers as i was not going for the same target audience as they are I found it difficult using language you would expect to read in a newspaper to write with than the normal style of text I would write. But I feel that I tackled this problem well by looking at other similar papers and studied how their types of text were worded.

In conclusion to this, I feel that my three tasks have linked well with each other. By this I mean that I am happy with in which the ways of my Radio Advert and my Poster have helped advertise my Newspaper. I do feel that if I had more time I could produce a much better and poster but i believe that my radio advert was was one of my best parts of my tasks.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

From my audience feedback I have had some very positive feedback with also a few negatives. I am please with my responses I received, and I will alter my newspaper to the ways in which I have been criticized for, i believe that this will make my newspaper better than what it was whilst also making the paper easier for my target audience to relate with. The positive feedback included comments about my layouts, colours, main title, photography and my adverts. The feedback I received on my stories is beneficial, as I know what to change now in terms of language. And I have now changed my newspapers language as I feel that doing this is for the best as my language that I used was too formal and did not suit my target audience correctly.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research planning and the evaluation stages?

Media Technologies is the way in which we can view different things using technology, for instance reading a newspaper on the internet Bromley Times, looking at images online Google images. The ways in which I used new media technologies to use in the construction and research and planning varies from using different online facilities. I researched other newspapers online to help decide what my paper i would base my newspaper on, in terms of conventions and layouts. I decided to look at the Bromley Times online as i was planning to base my newspaper in the Bromley area. This was a page to page newspaper that you could interactively use, you can flip the pages so you still have the original feeling of a paper in terms of turning the pages. This made me think about how I could make my paper seem more modern and technological but by using its original form.

I decided to use a Blackberry Barcode which Blackberry phone users can use by just scanning it. This will then connect you to the newspaper and will allow the newspaper to send news of what ever topic straight to your Blackberry smartphone. I added this feature as I know a large percentage of people of my age own a BlackBerry smart phone so they can interact with my paper.

Another form of using media technologies for my research and planning was the radio adverts on youtube. This helped me decide what type of radio advert I would produce. I listened to various adverts, with advertising different newspapers such as the daily sport the sun and many more. This helped me to decide what type of radio advert I had to make to get straight to the point in advertising my newspaper.

I also used Google images to help to look at past posters, which were advertising newspapers. I did this for my research to try and see what posters professional papers could produce. I feel that my poster is like conventional newspapers poster which i believe was key to advertise my newspaper. I tried to make it fit my target audience’s needs by making it aesthetically pleasing and by using colours and text that would draw in my audience.

The music that I used for my radio advert was found on GarageBand, after I recorded my advert using a peer doing a different voice, I had to decide what type of music would suit my advert perfectly, as I said I decided to make me newspaper a type of charity spoof i used sad music to get that charity feel across to my audience. I feel that this was the right choice, as I want my advert to attract viewers and not seem like another boring advert that you hear on the radios.

This is what my newspaper is starting to look like, as you can see it has the standard 5 column layout which is key for me as i want my paper to look a professional as possible. I plan to change my weather plug and my subscribe plug as i do not think that they look good enough for my newspaper. I think that i have left enough room for my stories which are the most important part of the newspaper.

Radio advert research

I decided to look at adverts for sky sports and the Sunday Sport when researching for my radio adverts. I used You Tube and have embedded the adverts here. I'm going to use these as inspiration for my radio advert. One thing they all have in common is they represent men as very masculine - strong, interested in women and also they all use humour.

My photography

I took my photos at a rugby game at a rugby club down the road from my school. It was the location picked by the school as a neutral ground so it was fair on both teams. My success at capturing the game with my photography was high as I had managed to get photos for my main picture and was able to use other photos that i took in other areas of my newspaper, i believe that the photos that i had taken used many different effects such as deep focus shots, the angles i used where mainly at body height with exceptions such as me being below the players in such photos as the one where the players are in a line out and i am at a lower angle to them when the shot was taken. I wasn't able to capture the players in different lights in my photos as it was all using natural light, however there is a contrast with the light did change throughout the game due to the weather conditions and i think you can see this in some of the photos.

New masthead design

This is my final masthead design for my newspaper. I have decided to make it look like this because it uses strong bold colours which will attract my young male audience. I changed it from my old design as i felt it was not appealing to my target audience, this was because the colours used where light blues and whites which i believe to be more feminine rather than masculine. The font i have used for my masthead is a download font from the internet, i have chosen to use this font as it gives a young appeal to it and it is similar to the graffiti type of fonts seen by young people every day. The effects i have used on this masthead is the deep bold colours such as the red and black but i then contrast this with a white part to it which i believe makes the paper stand out as it show what the paper is about, i also added the date going down the side as i think this looks good and will tell the reader if the paper is new or old straight away.

RIVALING

Representation –initially I thought that I would target the age group of 16-25 but I decided I would try and target my newspaper to the age group of 18-30. This is a big difference between the age groups i feel like it should be target at the 18-30 year olds as they are more educated than 16-25 and will have more knowledge of sport. I believe that 16 year olds will not even be interest in reading newspapers as it will be to long winded for them to read.

My newspaper will be for the area of where I live which is Bromley. This is a big area so it will have relevance to everyone in the area, whilst giving them information that they might not have heard about. There are different papers in the local area such at the News Shopper, which i believe to not be very exciting and does not appeal to the youth culture in the area. This is because it is dull meaning that it is lacking in colours and is not nice to look at. So I feel that by me combining the correct ideas by constructing a newspaper with original colours and clever layouts, I feel that I can attract my targeted audience by producing a newspaper that is aesthetically pleasing.

Institution – As my paper will be a locally based paper it will have similar perspectives to that of its rivals, the Bromley Metro, The News Shopper however it will be different than them as it has one major topic about it which is sport whilst the other two newspapers cover a wider range of news. It will have similar conventions in some aspects the 5 column layout but the photos, colouring and text layout will be different than the other competitive newspapers which i think will attract my target audience. My newspaper will have photographs and colourful advertisements as my paper will be targeted at the younger audience this will make the paper seem more welcoming to the audience.

Values – My paper will look different to other papers which will make it seem better than its competitors , this will be done by its aesthetics. My paper title will hopefully be eye-catching and have layouts and pictures to support it being this. The date will be placed next to the title to show its that it is a recent paper and not an out of date paper. This is important as I feel the readers need to know that their stories are recent and up to date.

Audience – My audience is mainly men as sports is seen as male field. This means that my newspaper will have bold colours which will appeal to the male gender. It will also show pictures of males playing sports with advertisement which will interest them even more as they will want to see what the ads are about and what news stories are inside about the favourite sports.

Language – The language that I am going to use for my newspaper will try to be stand out and be easy for my readers to understand which will have certain aspects that will attract the readers. By this I mean that the title and the main headline will try and stand out from the others. The style of writing used in my newspaper will be targeted at my audience; this means that I will use language which is more conversational rather than tabloid style newspaper writing so that the readers can understand and respect the language used in my articles.

Ideology – I want my newspaper to celebrate and inform my audience with major local sporting achievements. I will achieve this by showing my target audience stories of people in their area around the same ages as them and their achievements late. My paper will have advertisements relating to the younger generation and advertise products that people will hopefully be interested and look in to.

Narrative – ?

Genre – the genre of my newspaper will try to be a new modern sports newspaper that caters for the needs for the readers. My newspaper will have similar style to tabloid newspapers with such conventions as 5 column layouts advertising and effective pictures. This will then make my newspaper seem more professional and which will then make the target audience be more willing to pick it up and read it.

Ideas For Brief

I have decided to create a 2 page newspaper for the local area for my A2 production work i have chosen this as i tried out making a short film as a practice and it didn't go well so I felt to make it a newspaper instead. It will consist of my own photos which i will be able to edit using my skills in photoshop, the articles i will be researching and interviewing for myself and i will design the logo and the brand for the newspaper. To know how to make a professional looking paper i firstly had to study an existing local newspaper so i looked at the Bromley Times they have a different target audience to what i am looking for, my target audience will be to an age range of the youth this will be around 18-34 year olds.

The layout of most professional papers is a 5 column which with a lot of advertising, this is how the newspapers are funded and which is the main reason why most local papers are free. Even though my target audience is different from the Bromley Times i will still be using the same layout as them, this is because i will able to fit in a lot of photos. My paper will have it logo in the top left this is like most conventional newspapers with the headline in bold big writing this also helps the paper to stand out.

My newspaper will be based on sport, music and youth culture (lifestyle). This means the newspaper will have to be relevant to my audience and it will mean that the articles i put in it will have to be interesting to my readers, this mean that i will have to include vidrant and colourful photos which will intrega the reader. However this will be hard as good news doesn't really sell but bad news does. This will mean that my main story will have to be bad news with the other two stories being lighter than the main story this will hopefully result in the newspaper looking good as it shows both type of stories.
